Using distributional data to explore derivational under-markedness: a study of the event/property polysemy in nominalization

چکیده

This paper proposes a corpus-based analysis of deverbal suffixed nouns in Italian displaying an ambiguity between a clear event reading (partenza ‘departure’) and a clear property reading (intelligenza ‘intelligence’). It focuses, in particular on words derived with the suffixes -nza and -zione. Three sets of syntactic contexts for words containing the two suffixes (highand low-frequency -nza words and high-frequency -zione words) were extracted from a large corpus of contemporary Italian and coded according to their semantic reading. The comparison of the three datasets, on the one side, confirms an evolution, already observed in the literature, of -nza from a typically deverbal action suffix to a typically deadjectival property suffix, and, on the other side, shows that the same ambiguity is observed with -zione nouns, although, unlike the case of -nza, in this case it remains a marginal feature. The results obtained show the interest of large-scale empirical observations for the analysis of morphological phenomena, and militate in favour of a model in which (regular) polysemy should be considered as a constituting property of derived words.

Boosting the Coverage of a Semantic Lexicon by Automatically Extracted Event Nominalizations

An important trend in recent works on lexical semantics has been the development of learning methods capable of extracting semantic information from text corpora. The majority of these methods are based on the distributional hypothesis of meaning and acquire semantic information by identifying distributional patterns in texts. In this article, we present a distributional analysis method for ext...

The present study aimed to explore how nominalization is manifested in a sample of Physics and Applied Linguistics research articles (RAs), representing hard and soft sciences respectively. To this end, 60 RAs from discipline-related professional journals were randomly selected and analyzed in light of Halliday and Matthiessen’s (1999) taxonomy of nominalization. Comparing the normalized freque...

Nominalization in Soqotri, a South Arabian language of Yemen

In his recent article Deutscher (2009: 199) suggests that “nominalization is an unsung hero in the story of subordination”. He goes on to say that “[t]he ability to derive a noun from a verb, that is, to reify a verbal predicate and present it as a nominal argument or modifier, is the core of subordination”. While Deutscher (2009) believes that the relevant nominalization for his study is “deri...
